What are powers of attorney?
A power of attorney is used to grant someone the right to make decisions on behalf of another person. These decisions can include things such as making decisions about health care and signing legal documents.
Do I need a power of attorney?
It is always a good idea to have a power of attorney. This ensures that your best interests are looked after, even if you yourself are no longer able to attend to your own needs.
If I have a power of attorney, do I need anything else?
Even if you have both medical and financial powers of attorney in place, it is important to also have a living will. While the powers of attorney allow someone else to make decisions for you, the living will makes sure that the person with this power knows exactly what your wishes are and gives him or her some guidance when making decisions.
Can anyone make a power of attorney?
Yes and no. Anyone can make a power of attorney, so long as they are competent. It is important to know that in situations involving degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, simply being diagnosed with the disease does not automatically mean that person lacks capacity to make a power of attorney.
